EDITH NEWLIN CHASE was born in 1905 and raised as a Quaker on an Indiana farm, where she milked cows every day. She wrote The New Baby Calf as a poem in the late '30s, and said: "It came to me clearly and rapidly as I worked at housekeeping, and if I remember right, it required no revision." It was first published in a book for pre-school children in 1945, where, many years later, it was discovered by Scholastic's then director of publishing. Ms. Chase passed away in 2004.

Ron Broda loves creating books for children - he has ten brothers and sisters, and lots of nieces and nephews. His sumptuous paper sculptures bring Waters to vivid life.
