The Carousel by Ursula Dubosarsky

Illustrated by Walter Di Qual

One winter's day my dad and I
Went down to see the carousel.
We stood and watched as round and round
The little horses rose and fell.

So begins the magical journey
of a small girl and a wooden horse.

A journey of music and mirrors,
of green hills and sunlit skies,
of wishes and freedom.

From this much-loved author and
brilliant new illustrator...

Ursula Dubosarsky was born in Sydney and wanted to be a writer from the age of six. She is widely regarded as one of the most talented and original writers in Australia today. She is the author of over 60 books for children and young adults, which have won a number of national prizes, including the NSW, Victorian, South Australian and Queensland Premier's Literary Awards. Ursula was the Australian Children’s Laureate 2020–2021. Ursula has a PhD in English literature from Macquarie University and lives in Sydney with her family.

Walter di Qual is an Australian artist. Walter had been asked by Ursula Duborsarsky, and Penguin Books if he would illustrate the book after they saw the horse painted for the Children's Foundation exhibition at the Sydney Children's Hospital in 2010. The horse painting told the story of a timber and paper mache rocking horse that melted in the rain in a refugee camp when Walter was 4 years old (and how it's useful to be able to make or draw or mentally construct your own toys because memories are often the only things we get to keep).
