When Elinor and Frank first moved into the street, they thought it was exciting to be living in an old shop. But then they discovered there was nowhere to play outside. At the back of the shop were sheds crammed with junk. At the front the traffic whizzed past. And to make matters worse, the owners of the shops on either side were grumps. Elinor and Frank were lonely, until Frank's birthday came, and Elinor decided to give him a surprise.

Jill Morris was born in Sandgate, Queensland, Australia in 1936. She has a Bachelor of Arts degree and Diploma of Education from the University of Queensland. She is a producer of educational programs, a playwright, an editor and a publisher. She is co-founder and director of the Greater Glider Productions, a children's publishing and production house. Morris has written over seventy books primarily for children. Her titles include The Boy Who Painted the Sun, Australian Bats, Australian Owls, Frogmouths and Nightjars, Green Air, The Wombat Who Talked to the Stars and Velvet the Flying Gecko.
