Illustrated by Percy Trezise

There are two very different groups of Quinkins living in Cape York, and they don't get along very well together. This is because the Imjim Quinkins like to steal children from the Aborigines and take them to their deep, dark caves where they turn them into bad Imjims like themselves. The Timara Quinkins spend their time trying to save the children and return them safely to their families. The Imjims are short and fat with marvelous springy tails. They use these tails to bounce along, covering great distances with every leap. The Timara are quite different, being almost as tall as a tree and very, very skinny. In fact they can hide in a crack in a rock. This tale from the Dreamtime tells of the attempt by the Imjim to lure Moonbi and Leealin from their family by imitating their father voice. A Timara, who has been watching, calls on all his friends to help.

Dick Roughsey was an Australian Aboriginal artist from the Lardil language group on Mornington Island in the south-eastern Gulf of Carpentaria, Queensland. His tribal name was Goobalathaldin, meaning “the ocean, dancing”, describing a “rough sea”.

Percy Trezise AM (1923 - 2005) was a painter and writer as well as an historian and documenter of Aboriginal rock art. Trezise served in the RAAF during WW2, and from 1956 he worked in northern Australia as an airline pilot. From the air he would gauge areas likely to contain Aboriginal rock art that he would later explore. Trezise collaborated on a series of children’s books with Aboriginal artist Dick Roughsey, and as well as being a member of the Order of Australia, in 2004 he received an Honorary Doctorate from James Cook University.
