Illustrated by Pau Estrada

A fascinating introduction to the early career of Pablo Picasso, weaving a gentle fictional context for his evolution through the famous Blue and Rose periods. Estrada's illustrations complement the story beautifully, as the greys of Picasso's early poverty and depression give way to a brightly coloured world of his artistic recognition as the father of Cubism. In the pages of the book there are the beggars, jugglers, scenes and animals that we also find on his paintings, caught at the moment of their intersection with the artist's eye...

At the end, there are some real images of his artworks (with their titles and the museums where you could find them) as well as a list corresponding some of the drawings made by Pau Estrada that represent friends, family or influencing people of Picasso's life.

The late P.I. Maltbie admired Mark Twain since she was in elementary school--especially as they shared a love of both writing and animals. After Priscilla wrote her first children's picture book, 'Picasso and Minou', she did some digging and found out about the real Bambino's leap into the newspaper headlines in 1905—and so Bambino and Mr. Twain was born. Priscilla also authored 'Claude Monet: The Painter Who Stopped the Trains'.

Pau Estrada studied literature at the University of Barcelona and attended the Rhode Island School of Design on a Fulbright Scholarship. He is a teacher and a video artist and has illustrated many books for children in both Europe and the United States, including Picasso and Minou by P. I. Maltbie. This is his first book for HarperCollins. He lives in Barcelona.
